Making connections

At school, the first grade kids are learning to communicate mental images using pictures, and to make connections. My daughter holds her hands together sometimes and says triumphantly that she has made a connection. These are important for reading and writing poetry as well.

There are so many journals (online and print), poetry blogs, poetry notes on facebook and twitter. I don't skim through the lines in a poem or blink my eyes at one. I like to read one good poem and think about it for a few days or longer.

I discovered an interesting blog today. Its titled read a little poetry. The blogger says its not named after Goethe's quote but it definitely seems to apply the idea.

"A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul." - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

I read this and I remembered a poem I read a few days ago on Sam Rasnake's blog. Its titled 'Stone' and is by Charles Simic. Here's the link.

I have made a connection.
